In June 2021, NAPAWF, the Center for Reproductive Rights, and In Our Own Voice: National Black Women’s Reproductive Justice Agenda filed an amicus brief in support of plaintiff Planned Parenthood of South Atlantic’s challenge to its disqualification as a Medicaid provider in the state of South Carolina. This brief is a follow-up to the brief we filed in 2019, asking that the court uphold the lower court’s decision in favor of Planned Parenthood South Atlantic.

The brief explains the harm to women of color, who make up a disproportionate number of Medicaid beneficiaries, that would result from South Carolina’s actions, the particular importance of the right to choose one’s medical provider, particularly one’s reproductive health care provider, for women of color, and the vital importance of the private right of action enforcement mechanism for Medicaid beneficiaries, particularly women of color.
