NYC Reproductive Justice Leadership Institute

RJLI EMAIL SURVEY LAUNCH

The NYC Reproductive Justice Leadership Institute is a group of 15 young, Asian American women and gender nonconforming people living in NYC. We’re working on a community based participatory research project to shape ongoing and future reproductive justice organizing for Asian American communities in the city.

We come to this work as students, social workers, educators, healthcare workers, community organizers, technologists, artists, performers, (and more!) who are committed to a reproductive justice framework that centers the power of women and gender nonconforming people of color to make decisions for their own bodies, families, and communities.

What does RJLI New York research?

Our 2016-2017 research explores how Asian American women, trans, and gender nonconforming people (ages 18-35) access sexual and reproductive healthcare in  NYC. We hope to deepen our understanding of how different structures (family, immigration, policing, etc.) influence our communities’ ability to get the care we need. This information will ultimately shape how we and future RJLI cohorts organize for the well being of Asian American communities in NYC.

How have you conducted research and this project?

  • We’ve been meeting every other Saturday to form our research question, plan our methodology, and conduct our research (and also to cook for and eat with each other, celebrate birthdays, share our support needs and gratitudes, etc).
  • The first part of our project, a survey, is being distributed to Asian American women and gender nonconforming people in New York City through a variety of community organizations.
  • We also are holding identity-based focus groups to share stories and connect on a personal level throughout April, as well as a larger community forum bringing together community members, organizers, service providers, and other stakeholders in May. We hope to see you there!

How can I get involved?

We thought you’d never ask! Check out RJLI New York’s website to take our survey, join a townhall or focus group, or just to contact us and get involved in your community!
