SPECIAL GUEST :

::::|||| JOYO VELARDE ||||::::
http://www.joyovelarde.com/
For local music fans, Joyo Velarde is a warm and familiar voice.  The Filipino-born, Bay Area-raised singer has brought her sultry tones to dozens of projects for the hip-hop collective Quannum, including Blackalicious’ 2002 best-seller “Blazing Arrow” and Lyrics Born’s 2003 album “Later That Day.” She’s performed at hundreds of concerts and festivals as a backing singer for her husband, Tom “Lyrics Born” Shimura.  But Velarde, who first met the Quannum crew as a UC Davis student in the early ’90s, hasn’t recorded an album of her own until now. Released in February of 2010, “Love and Understanding” is a mix tape treat filled with mostly throwback joints of various urban tastes.  Several tracks also feature Quannum family members Lyrics Born and Gift of Gab from Blackalicious.  She’ll be performing hits from Love and Understanding and much more at GO!OHANA Thursday, August 19th.
