I’m a CODA – Child of Deaf adults. Navigating between the Deaf and hearing worlds has put me in a place like no other – for example, I can sign with my parents through windows, from across the street, while our mouths are full of food, and at the library! With Deaf culture there is an exceptional language, culture and community that I love and value. Don’t get me wrong though – we struggle for their rights on a daily basis. If you add onto that the intersectionality of being poor, monolingual and immigrant, the challenges and struggles we experience are often magnified exponentially. I became protective of my parents at a very young age, and I continue to navigate and interpret my way through various institutional and social systems that were not created to support them. These are the roots that have shaped my passion and approach to life, work, relationships and community.
